Cheap Digital Camera - Don't Buy Too Many Mega Pixels

By Sharon De Jesus

Digital cameras keep getting cheaper every day. Not only are they getting cheaper but the mega pixels keep getting better. One of the questions you may be asking yourself is how many megapixels you actually need.

If you are looking for a cheap digital camera, and you buy one with too many megapixels you end up paying more for camera you didn't need. When you go to the store salesmen are going to try to sell you the camera that's most modern and has the most megapixels. Now, it's true that a camera today can come with seven or eight megapixels and cost you much less than a camera that had two or three megapixels five years ago, but in the end doesn't make sense to pay the same amount evenly getting more megapixels?

How many megapixels you need really depends on what you going to do with the camera. For the average user, of the most megapixels you really need is 3.1. Now, 3.1 megapixels came on cameras almost years ago, and now some cell phones actually come with three or 3.1 megapixels. If you are never going to make pictures that are larger than 8 x 10, that you are spending more than you need to.

If you're planning a making prints that are larger than 8 x 10, then it makes sense to get something with more megapixels. For many of you amateur photographers out there that something that you're going to need. But, for the average user is going to make 4 x 6 pictures and just put them in a photo will or use the photos to send an e-mail, or use the photos in a digital frame, and something between 3.1 and five is plenty.

If you are absolutely determined to spend more money on the camera, it is better to spend the money and make sure you get a camera that has a better lens. But , if you're going to use a point and shoot camera, don't waste your money. Besides, you probably won't know own the camera for more than one or two years before you decide it's time for another one. Ask yourself this question... How long did I actually own the last camera that I had? I'll bet it wasn't for that long. Or, it broke or you lost it. So, in this world of consumerism, spend less because you're going to get another camera soon anyway.
